The Heartland Peony Society
will have
its 5th annual Peony Day on Sat. Oct 13.
We have BIG plans and events.
We start with our HPS official (and only)
business meeting -very short.
Then a member's only auction of
rare
and choice peonies - these
include some
fabulous varieties of tree, herbaceous,
species and inter-sectional plants
at prices ranging from bargains to
'stratospheric'.
A public program begins at 10:30.
The Tree Peony Festivals of Northern
China- Heze, Luoyang, Shandong by
Greg Speichert (Crystal Palace Peren-
nials). Greg attended these festivals a
couple years ago and has gorgeous
slides
of all the events to share. Should
be a major treat for all. Questions follow.
A
member's sale takes place over the
lunch break.
Public
sale of peonies starts at 1:30 pm.
We are bringing in over 1,000 plants from
around the world and all across the coun-
try and member's donations. This inclu-
des around 250 tree peonies imported
from China to coincide with our program.
Around 200 specimen Japanese tree
peonies will also be there. Over 400 herb-
aceous
peonies including many new
choice hybrids. At least 4 different
species and as many inter sectionals as
we
can grab.
We have had as many as 200
people wai-
ting to buy these choice items and
norm-
ally
sell
out
in 3 or 4 hours of frenzied
shopping.
This
promises to be an even bigger event
than last year as we have increased local
gardener's interest as we bring in even
more, bigger, better and choicer plants
to an eager audience. Buyers come with
long wish lists that we are often able
to fill completely. Prices are always below
most catalog list prices and buyers get
to
choose the exact plant they want. HPS
members get an added discount.
This
is always a busy day, but enormous
fun and learning for all. If you have any
glimmer of getting towards Kansas City
in Oct., Please write and I'll give you full
info on how to get there, how to
join
HPS etc. Of course visit the HPS web site
for info too.

Canadian Peony Society (CPS)
announced:
The Canadian Peony Society's root
sale at the Royal Botanical Gardens
in Hamilton, Ontario, will be held this
year on September 30, 2001 from 1
P.M. until 4 P.M., or while quantities
last. Look for us beside the Garden
Cafe on the main level of the RBG
Centre. This is the same room in
which the APS show was held in
June. I don't yet have a list of all that
we'll be offering this year but will
provide a list to anyone interested
when I get it. We are still accepting
donations to augment what we al-
ready have.
